5 Ways Electricians Lose Jobs Before They Pick Up the Tools
Most electricians don't have a skills problem. They have a getting-the-work-booked problem. The jobs are out there, people are searching for them every day, but somewhere between the phone ringing and the van turning up, work quietly slips away.
Here are the five most common leaks we see, and how to plug them.
1. Missing the call while you're in a consumer unit
You can't answer the phone with your hands in a live board, and you shouldn't try. But the person ringing about a tripped RCD or a dead socket isn't going to wait. If you don't pick up, they ring the next electrician on Google. Most never leave a voicemail.
The fix: an automatic text that goes out the moment you miss a call. Something like "Sorry I missed you, I'm on a job. What do you need doing?" It keeps the customer talking to you, not your competitor, and you can reply properly when you're off the tools.
2. Emergencies that come in after you've finished for the day
Power cuts, burning smells and tripping circuits don't keep office hours. A customer who gets in touch at 8pm and hears nothing until morning has usually found someone else by breakfast.
The fix: online booking, so customers can grab a slot themselves, or an out-of-hours AI assistant that answers their questions, takes their postcode and job details, checks it's work you want and books it in. You wake up to jobs in the diary instead of missed messages.
3. Quotes that sit in a notebook
Rewires, consumer unit upgrades, EV charger installs. These are the bigger jobs, and the customer is usually getting two or three quotes. The electrician who sends a clear, professional quote the same day, and follows up when they go quiet, usually wins it.
The fix: create and send quotes from your phone before you leave the driveway. Let customers accept online, turn the accepted quote into an invoice in one tap, and let the system chase the ones who haven't replied.
4. Chasing payment at the end of the week
Doing the work is the easy part. Then comes writing invoices at the kitchen table, sending bank details, and awkward "just checking you got my invoice" messages.
The fix: send the invoice by text with a payment link the customer can pay there and then. You can see what's paid and what's outstanding at a glance, without digging through your banking app.
5. Happy customers who never leave a review
When someone needs an electrician, they're letting a stranger into their home to work on something dangerous. Reviews are what they go on. Yet most sparkies have a handful at best, because asking feels awkward and it's easy to forget.
The fix: an automatic review request sent after every job, with a direct link to your Google review box. Every customer gets asked, every time, and more recent reviews help you show up higher when people search "electrician near me".
